You know, I get reeeeal tired of writing about irrelevant horse hockey like rape, homicide and domestic abuse. Booorrr-ring!

So it was a nice change of pace to write a little blurb for our features section. Every week, we have an article with four to five entries from people all over the newsroom who write about something they’re jazzed about, whether it’s a movie, book or album.

Heck, this blog made an appearance some months back (thanks, BP! Hope you’re still reading!)

For my part, I wrote about coffee, cause coffee’s important, unlike you getting stabbed. Rub some fucking dirt on it, walk it off and quit whining! NOT MY G-D PROBLEM!

Anyways, here’s what I wrote:

You’ll take a wife, husband or hipster zombie kid (not judging) as your lawfully wedded spouse. Co-owner Sharon Grossman concocted the drink in January with an eye toward the upcoming hot months. News (link below) talking about how many young women are using their hormonal birth control to skip or delay their periods, mostly for convenience’s sake or simply because the “time of the month” just doesn’t fit into their busy schedules. Hannah: I did call you cause I wanted to make sure you hadn’t disappeared.

Adam: What do you mean?

Hannah: I realized today that if something happened to one of us, the other one would have no way of ever knowing cause it’s not like your friends would call me. It’s not like I know your mom, so you know, if something happened to you I would have no way of knowing you were gone.

So I guess i was just calling you to make sure you would call me if you ever disappeared, which doesn’t even make sense.

Adam: Uh, OK kid; will do.

Adam: I miss you.

Hannah: You do?

Adam: I do. Yeah I do. I wish you were here right now. I saw your name earlier on the phone, and I was, like, “Where the fuck is that girl? I wish she was here right now.”

Hannah: Welp, I’m in Michigan so…What do you see out your window in New York right now?

Adam: Ugh, you want me to get up and look?

Hannah: I do, yeah, get up and look.

Adam: Uggggggggggggghhhh!

[gets up and goes to window]

OK, what do I see? Oh! Oh! There’s this lady crackhead. I’ve talked to her like twice. She’s pretty fucking tweaked, but, I don’t know, funny. One time we had a conversation about cashews that lasted, like, 30 minutes. She wanted cashews and she thought I had them, but I didn’t so she’s trying to grab my ass, saying I had them in my back pocket, and I’m, like, “No I dont have them in my back pocket…”

Window down, Suit & Tie on

Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” popped on the radio while I was cruising around with the window down on this beautiful day.

I get why people criticize her for writing song after song about her boyfriends of five minutes, how they’re terrible people and their breakup is the worst thing to happen to a human ever in the history of humans existing on Earth with other humans.

But I don’t think it’s fair. Swift is rich; she’s famous; millions of people hear her songs every day. But none of that makes her any less of a 23-year-old, and let’s face it, most 23-year-olds are idiots.

Not in a bad way, but that’s the gift and curse of being 23. Every feel is something no one has ever had — not like this! — so goddamn fucking real and raw. They say the same thing about 17-year-olds, and I’m sure 35-year-olds say the same thing about me.

Ah, to be older and more condescending. Or at least to have more people to condescend to.

As I got older, I figured out the world didn’t end, and if the feelings still spiked or sank, I at least knew they would level off or snake up in time.

I learned to take emotions in stride, on condition, with a grain of salt. That is, to treat them as feelings — things felt in a moment — not as my everything.

But I won’t say that shit isn’t real, because it totally fucking is. And I won’t pat Taylor on her 23-year-old head like a child and tell her that she’ll learn as she gets older.

Fuck that.

I always hated when people who had experienced the day-in-day-out grind of adulthood talked about “real life” and the “real world” as if I wasn’t part of it, as if my existence was less than because I was a student and living off family money.

Now I know there’s a certain truth to what they said, although I’d never use the word “real” to exclude someone else’s experience. I still think it’s a dick thing to say.

No, Taylor’s life, love and pain are just as real as anything. But — and no offense to her or her heartache (I mean, she’s getting a helluva lot more mileage than I have out of mine) — I still changed the station. Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie” was playing. I listened to the whole thing.

A source called this morning to let me know there was more going on in an investigation that we’ve been reporting on. He and his wife were instrumental in helping us track down information.

So when he mentioned her involvement, my ear was pressed against the phone and my head was nodding as I loudly said, “Your wife was great” within earshot of the entire newsroom.

Heads shot up from desks and away from computer screens. Laughter everywhere.

So I got up — cell phone in hand, conversation going, with a face warm and red — flipped the bird and spun around to get all those b-holes.

Had a woman tell me in general conversation something like, “I hear I need to dance with you.” Not like someone told it to her that night and she wanted a dance (we were walking down the street.)

She just heard I had some sweet dance moves and wanted to get up in that business in the near future.
